Below is an excerpt from our Excel Engineering Revit-BIM Standards Manual;

  1. Place large linked / imported files on their own Workset
  2. Use Manage Links > Unload to unload Linked AutoCAD files from memory (similar to AutoCAD XREF), when not in use.
  3. Link individual Worksets from a linked Revit file; rather than linking the whole Revit project file. (especially consultants files)
  4. Use Current View Only option when Importing / Linking CAD files.
  5. Use Revit’s Query/Delete of unwanted layers to reduce unused content from linked CAD file.
  6. Use Insert Type; Origin to Origin
  7. Our # 7 is similar to above and we will verify the AutoCAD LIMITS are set close to the CAD contents; prior to linking the DWG file.
  8. Use Import > CAD Files > Specify the Layers you need prior to adding  the file
  9. Review possible use of Revit’s PIN Command for Linked files to avoid accidental movement.
  10. Use Manage Links, to set the Revit link file; Path Type=RELATIVE and Reference Type=OVERLAY
