Miron Construction-Appleton WI hosted an Oce’ Graphics workshop last week titled; “Increasing Accuracy Through Color

The workshop demonstrated the value of printing more documentation in color throughout the complete design-build process.

Colored printing is another process-technology that complements the efficiencies of both the BIM & IPD processes for building design.

  • “Color increases understanding and retention of printed material by an average of 65%”
  • “Highlighting key information on printed material can reduce search time by as much as 80%”
  • Color reduces errors – up to 80%

  • Color provides a better visual experience
  • Color presents a more professional image
  • One color sheet can do the job of multiple B&W sheets

Group exercise

  • We reviewed two printed sets of floor plans (1st & 2nd floor).
  • One was a blueline set and the other set was printed with more information using color.
  • We were asked to count and provide a total number of sinks.
  • We provided more accurate answers from the color copy vs the monochrome version.

As a group we shared how we were currently using color for specific tasks, using both digital and hard copy formats.

Here’s our short list of how attendees were already using color

  • Coordinate trades: Differentiate disciplines: (HVAC, plumbing, structure) on plans & sections
  • HVAC : supply & return ductworks, diffuser vs return vents
  • Phasing: demolition, existing, new
  • Wall assemblies: rated wall systems, wall heights (bottom of structure, half height)
  • Electrical: using color to differentiate conduit sizes
  • Piping: In floor vs ceiling, supply vs drains, hot vs cold supply
  • Finishes-Materials: floors, ceilings
  • Space Planning: departments, leased vs vacant
  • Digital Plan Sets: PDF and DWF file formats, minimize printing, portable format
  • Digital Plan Sets: Embedding shaded and rendered views in plan sets.

It was a great workshop!

Our thanks to Mr Peter Lawrence from OCE’  for providing us with a PDF copy of his ROI-based presentation.
